Biparjoy may intensify into category 3 cyclone: Met

Muscat – The tropical storm Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea turned into a category 1 cyclone on Wednesday with the possibility of it further intensifying in a couple of days.

The storm is likely to turn into a category 2 cyclone on Thursday and  category 3 by Friday, the Directorate General of Meteorology said on Wednesday.

The Met office said that the latest satellite images show that Biparjoy is located 1,140km away from the coasts of the sultanate. 

The wind speed around the eye of the cyclone is estimated between 65 to 82 knots and it is likely to intensify to category 3 cyclone on Friday, with no direct impact on Oman weather in the next three days.

‘The expected movement is to the north of the Arabian Sea with chances of high cloud advection over South Sharqiyah and Al Wusta governorates.’

The cyclone it is likely to move north to northwest by Saturday. 

Met stated that maximum wave height may reach 4m to 6m along South Sharqiyah and al Wusta governorates.
